What is SellaBand?
Artists and fans have one goal. Make music and money together. Artists
upload their music and profile. Fans find artists they like and believe in.
$10 (plus transaction costs) buys them a piece of the action. $50,000 gets
the artist in the studio. Fans get an exclusive CD send to their homes.
Artists make their dream come true. From now on bands and believers are in
business together. You are the record company!
Why did you come up with SellaBand?
The idea comes from a love for music and a frustration about the fact that
Pim always heard the same artists over and over on the radio. He would see a
lot of live performances and notice how much talented artists are being
unnoticed by the traditional music industry. He was
working for an oil company when he thought of the concept. He decided to give
up his job and approach the right people to execute the business plan. He
found Johan Vosmeijer and Dagmar Heijmans. Both experienced in the music
industry. When they heard about SellaBand they gave up their jobs to launch
this business and follow their dream: Bands and Fans in business together!
Who is behind SellaBand?
SellaBand is run by Johan Vosmeijer and
Dagmar Heijmans and Pim Betist.
Instead of using his masters degree, to climb the ladder in the corporate world, Pim Betist gave up his job. He had a vision of how things could be different in the music industry, all he needed was to get in touch with the right people to pursue his dream. Then he met Johan Vosmeijer and Dagmar Heijmans and SellaBand was born.
Johan Vosmeijer is an experienced professional in the European music scene. He ran the legendary labels Epic and Columbia for Sony Music in the Benelux, and most recently he was the driving force behind the launch of Red Ink, a boutique label for SONY BMG. After a lifetime in the traditional music business, he thought the time was right for change. At that point he met Pim Betist, a man with a plan and a mission. The plan was SellaBand and the mission was to change the music world.
To complete the team, Johan introduced Pim to Dagmar Heijmans. He started his professional life at EMI Music. After years of becoming an industry expert at Sony Music and SONY BMG, he wanted to get back to the roots of his music passion: discovering new music. Five minutes after he met Pim he knew he had found his passion back and knew where his future would lie; at SellaBand.com.

What does it cost me to join SellaBand?
Nothing! Yes, SellaBand is totally free, no entrance fee or anything.
Can anyone be a Believer?
Well, almost anyone. Believers are music-fans that come to SellaBand and
have found an Artist they like and believe in. With $10 (plus transaction
costs) you can buy one of 5,000 Parts of that Artist's music. Once you have
officially registered yourself and have donated $10 on an Artist's account,
you have officially become a Believer on SellaBand.
Can I choose more than 1 artist?
Yes, you can. In fact, you can buy Parts in as many Artists as you like (up
to the equivalent of $500 in one go) as long as you make sure you have
enough money left on your bank account to buy some food and pay this
month's rent ;-)
Can I still join in after an Artist has reached the $50,000?
No, once the $50,000 has been reached, all Parties involved will be
notified and the so called 'Gate' closes. Only 5,000 Parts are issued, no
less and certainly no more. So, if you hear an Artist you like and believe
in, just make sure you buy your Part in time!
Can I start my own SellaBand Store?
All Believers with parts in a recording artist have the right to open their
own store on their profile page. This means there will be downloads
available, partly free and partly for sale and you can start selling them!
Also, you have the right to sell the available Limited Editions and regular
CD of the albums to music fans around the world.
How do I report abuse?
MoneyIf you find band images/pictures or lyrical content on Artist's profile
pages abusive and/or offensive, you can (please read our Privacy Guidelines
for more information).
Can I get my money back?
Yes. Until the $50,000 is reached, you can move your part(s) from one artist
to another. You can also press the big shiny refund button and get your
money (minus a small transaction fee) transferred back to your bank account.
Can I lose money on SellaBand?
No. Your $10 will only be used when your Artist of choice has reached
$50,000. When this is the case the artist will record a CD. This CD will be
sent to your home. Before the $50,000 is reached, you can take your $10 and
move it to another artist. Or you can withdraw your $10 (or whatever number
of Parts you have bought) alltogether.
What if the artist never makes the $50,000?
No worries. You can always move your part to a different artist or you can
press the refund button on your overview. Your money will be back on your
back account (minus a small transaction fee) in no time.
Can I deposit more than $10 on my SellaBand account?
Yes, you can. $20, 30, 40, up to $500 in one payment. You can use this
money to buy more parts later or buy products in the SellaBand Store.
What about transaction costs?
If you want to buy a Part ($10 per Part) in an Artist on SellaBand, we
offer several payment possibilities. Because every artist's budget is made
up of exactly $50,000 dollar, it is imperative that each Part is exactly
$10. Transaction costs are not included in that amount of money.
Transaction costs include the costs for administration, for fraud check,
and a fixed fee for your bank- or credit card company. Normally when you
shop online, transaction costs are included in the total price. Because of
the unique character of the SellaBand program, we show the amount of
transaction costs as a separate cost on your bill. By the way, the more
Parts you buy at the same time, the less you will relatively pay for
transaction costs.
Why does SellaBand solely use the US-currency?
Let's face it, there's not many places in the world where the $- sign is
unheard of. And as much as we love the British Pound, the Euro and Japanese
Yen, for simplicity reasons we decided to use one currency. So the target
is $50,000 and not €38,767, and a Part will cost you $10 instead of €8,24.
Why $50,000?
We realize that 50k is a lot of money, but all an artist needs is a maximum
of 5000 fans who believe in him/her to reach this goal. We have decided to
go for 50k for several reasons. First and foremost important reason is
quality. We want to give artists the opportunity to record their music in
an environment as high quality as any major label would offer them. We are
convinced that top studios, A&R managers and producers are necessary to
lift the music from sounding good to sounding excellent. Secondly we chose
to send an exclusive version of the CD to your home. This service already
consumes 40% of the total budget. For the exact split please see the the pie chart.
What does SellaBand get from the $50,000?
Nada, zero, nothing, $0,-. Yes that's right; every dollar that you spend
will be used for the recording of the tracks, manufacturing the Digi-Pack
and sending it to the Believers and not for big and shiny offices or new
SUVs for the SellaBand team.
What happens with my money when an Artist decides to leave SellaBand?
Your money will be deposited back on your balance. You can choose to get a
Part in a different Artist or to get your money back.
How much money can I make?
That all depends on what artists you believe in, how successful they are
and how active and successful you are as a believer. You can read all about
how much you can make as a believer with a store on SellaBand in the You
are the Record Company section here.
How do I get the money I've earned with SellaBand?
Freedom for Artists and BelieversOnce a month we put our phones off the hook, set our mailboxes to out-of-
office, close doors and windows, dust off the old abacus and go counting
for a couple of days. After we're done counting and dividing the money,
we'll deposit the money you've earned on your balance. Why is this done on
a monthly basis and not real time? We need to take into account bounced
credit card payments, charge backs and all that sort of jazz.

Why did you choose for your slogan: You are the Record Company?
When one of your artists makes the $50,000 and releases the CD we the
slogan on your profile page changes from “Your Music, Your Choice” to “You
are the Record Company”. From that point on you and your artist have been
in complete control of the whole music industry value chain. From selecting
the talent to promoting and selling the music. From then on you and the
Artist are truly in business together. The degree of your success on
SellaBand lies in your hands. If you manage to sell 10 albums for each part
you own in a recording artist you will have managed to help an artist
realize a dream, witnessed and influenced the creative process of recording
a professional album and made some money in the process. All without the
interference of the traditional music industry, thereby maintaining
complete artistic freedom.
Why does SellaBand give away a selection of the recorded music for free?
SellaBand gives away 3 tracks per album for free. These free downloads will
serve as a great promotional tool for the artists. Additionally the amount
of downloads will determine the free download market share of each artist.
The more free music is downloaded from your artist, the more money you and
the artist make.
How much money can I make?
SellaBand has two basic sources of revenue: Music Sales and Advertising.
One of the golden rules here on SellaBand is that we share these revenues
equally between Artists, Believers and ourselves. This means that for every
3 dollars we make through advertising or music sales 1$ goes to the artist,
1$ to the Believers and 1$ to SellaBand. We will now add another important
rule: The selling Believer gets a commission of 10% of the price
for each CD or download sold. This means that if you sell the standard
version of an album for $10,- you will get 1$ for your effort.
Here’s a break down of the prices and the corresponding commissions:

I bought more than one part in one artist. Can I sell my “spare” Limited Editions?
Yes, you can! On your profile page you can indicate the number of Limited
Editions you want to receive and how many you want to put on sale. The
consumer price for the Believer Editions is $15,-. Of this amount $11,-
goes to you and $1 goes to the account of the Artist, $2,50 is for V.A.T.,
and the last 50 cents are for commission. This commission is paid to the
Believer who makes the sale.
The Limited Editions are numbered. Which ones will be sold first?
The Limited Editions you sell through your page are your LEs. Once you have
sold yours you will start selling the rest of the spare copies owned by
other Believers. They will be sold in the sequence that the parts were
bought. This basically means that if you were the first to buy a part in an
artist and you wish to sell your limited edition(s), then your copies will
be the first to be sold by other Believers and the Store. This way, early
Believers are rewarded for being the first to stick their necks out for the
artist.
How much money will I make when I sell limited editions?
The consumer price for the Believer Editions is $15,-. Of this amount $11,-
goes to you and $1 goes to the account of the Artist, $2,50 is for V.A.T.,
and the last 50 cents are for commission. This commission is paid to the
one who makes the sale, this can either be a Believer or the Artist.
How much money will I make when I sell regular CD’s and Downloads?
As you know, we have two basic sources of revenue: Music Sales and
Advertising. One of the golden rules here on SellaBand is that we share
these revenues equally between Artists, Believers and ourselves. This means
that for every 3 dollars we make through advertising or music sales 1$ goes
to the artist, 1$ to the Believers and 1$ to SellaBand. If a sale (Download
or Regular CD) is made directly through a Believer's profile, he/she will
be allocated an extra 10% to his/her account. This percentage will be taken
off the SellaBand-percentage. This way we give you the opportunity to earn
more than your 1 : 5,000 per Part of the Believer's profit. The more active
you become, the more you can earn. We give you this incentive, because you
are helping us grow and are selling music on behalf of the Artist and we
feel this should be rewarded.
Does SellaBand also sell a regular version of the CD?
A few weeks after the release of the Limited Edition Albums, SellaBand will
also manufacture a so called Regular CD. This is a standard album in a
jewel case, with no extra features, just the music. We will sell this album
for $10,00 on our site, but will also announce a number of partnerships
with companies who will sell this product for us, both online and offline.
The profit of the standard album will also we split equally between The
Artist, The Believers and SellaBand. This will amount to $2,00 for each
party involved, so $6,00 profit in total. SellaBand's part of the profit
includes administration, warehousing and stock risk. Also, $1,00 of the
SellaBand share will go directly to the Believer as net-commission, in case
the sale is made through him/her. The $2,00 for The Artist, as well as the
$2,00 for The Believers are net profits and are fixed amounts. The
remaining $4,00 includes manufacturing, copyright and VAT.
As an artist, can I buy my album at cost price?
The Artist can also order stock of the Regular CD, for $6,00 only. This
includes the $2,00 for The Believers, plus $4,00 for manufacturing,
copyright and VAT. In this case SellaBand will not take a cut from the
profit, and The Artist can then sell the Regular CD on his/her own website
and/or local record stores and decide how big his/her own margin will be.
SellaBand gives away free downloads. How does this work?
From each SellaBand album we release, there will be three tracks available
as FREE downloads. The downloads are DRM-free at a bit rate of 256KB.
That's high quality stuff, indeed. The Artists makes the decision which
songs will be given away for free. These free downloads will serve as a
great promotional tool for the Artists. You can invite all your friends to
come to SellaBand and download this music for free. All they have to do is
register as a member on SellaBand, and there are no further commitments of
any kind. Additionally the amount of downloads will determine the market
share of each artist. The more free music is downloaded from your artist,
the more money you and the artist make.
SellaBand also sells paid downloads. How does this work?
The JukeboxAll downloads sold on SellaBand are DRM-free at a bit rate of 256KB. That's
high quality stuff, indeed. And they will only cost 50 dollar cents each.
We want to cross the bridge to the future of the music industry. Music will
always have value and the joy great music can give you can be priceless.
But it should be accessible and affordable for everyone, and it MUST be
value for money. With 50 cents per track, we think we have accomplished
this. And still, on every paid Download there will be a net profit of 30
dollar cents. 10 Cents go to The Artist, 10 Cents to The Believers and 10
Cents to SellaBand, unless the purchase is made directly through one of the
Believer's Shops, in which case 10% commission will be allocated and only 5
dollar cents go to SellaBand. And again we urge you to claim a part of our
cut; become active and help us grow!
How does the Jukebox work?
When you click on the juke box it will open as a stand alone player. You
can then personalise by clicking the options button. You can decide which
genres, from what country with how many parts sold will be played. This way
you can listen through all the artists on SellaBand at your work or at home
whilst doing important or insignificant stuff. When you like a song or
artist you can add him or her to your wish list or you can simply press the
red button to Believe!
