AUGUST 20th- ROCK EXTRA with SUNSOMA!
Just got back from spending an hour or so with Mandy Worrell at Radio Lion in Guildford- it's a hospital station run by volunteers to bring a bit of entertainment and general light relief to patients during their stay.
Every Wednesday evening from 6.pm- 7.pm bands from around the area pop in for a bit of a natter with the good lady herself, and get to perform a few acoustic tracks for the listeners.
'Compact and bijou' are words that neatly describe Mandy's Indie- infused basement studio- after a bit of furniture re-arranging,and creatively positioning ourselves, the room yielded to our collective body mass and we gathered around the one central mic eager to take a bite out of the evening.
With Mandy relishing her position at the helm, she firstly invited us to play 3 live tracks- SUMMER SUN - LITTLE WIRES - ONE THING, and then jovially steered us through an array of questions- what we were up to, how we write our songs, what our future plans are- all that kind of stuff.
A good time was had by all ( only sorry Matt and Hel weren't there, but it was strictly a 'no drums aloud' affair ), and it was a buzz to play live like that- acoustic always puts you on the line, cos' there is nothing to hide behind- it's just stripped back and raw and I love that.
Random stuff:
Me and Ian are house-sitting and looking after some prize chickens and bantems (mini chicks) and I'm quite getting into this whole rustic living vibe- I'm gradually overcoming my fear of picking them up too- they're quite cute really!
Yesterday I thought I'd get my new found friends to lend me their feathered ears- wait a mo- do they have ears?!! well anyway I sang them a new song idea- and sure enough, come evening time two fresh eggs had been laid- so I'll take that as a sign that they liked it!!
Cheers peeps
Mel xxx.

AUGUST 19th-Saturday night saw us doin our thang down in Southampton- we'd been trying to get a gig there for quite a while, so were most chuff-ed when a slot came up- managed to sell enough tickets to get a few quid back too, which will swiftly be going into the band fund!
Our new song LITTLE WIRES got a good reaction, as did THIS CANNOT BE BROKEN and TOO LONG NOW- a real encouragement as these are all pretty recent tracks. Apologies to Kimbo and Katherine though, as we omitted Hollow and Lines from our set this time round- I suppose as you progress in your writing and develop your style, it's easy to forget that people still like your older tracks and want to hear them too!! So we'll have to bear that in mind next time.....
We have an interview tomorrow night with Mandy Worrell at Radio Lion- It's a hospital station that was set up by volunteers years ago to entertain the patients during their stay- and tomorrow at 6.pm it's ROCK EXTRA with SUNSOMA!!
We'll be playing a couple of acoustic tracks and playing demos, talking about music, life, hobbies-( of which I have none! ) so should be good fun.
Speak soon
Mel xxx.

AUGUST 11th- good rehearsal time yesterday- got the drum parts sorted out for a new song called LITTLE WIRES which is very timely as we can include it in our set and aim to rock their little socks off in Southampton next week!!
Oh Yeah! We have an interview with Radio Lion on August 20th including: a live acoustic set, chit- chat about the band, playing a few demo tracks, and basically any other fun and frolics that we can think of! We will of course give Sellaband a plug too.
Have a good August week Sellabanders- is it just me, or do I smell a faint whiff of Autumn in the air already??
Mel and all xxx.

AUGUST 4th- Crikey!! We've been suffering some serious internet trouble lately which means we've been off the radar for a bit, but thankfully all has been reconnected and we're raring to go!!
Never a dull moment in the Sunsoma camp- we've done a few gigs since I last blogged, ranging from downright disappointing ( due to technical difficulties ), to kickin' with shouts of MORE,MORE resonating around the room - well actually it was a tent!
The last gig was truly great fun for us and has left us all on a bit of a high. We performed in the acoustic cafe at a community event in my hometown, and played a set of semi - acoustic tracks that went down a storm with our local crowd. I think it gave us all food for thought, that in amongst our more 'full on' gigs, it might not be such a bad idea to do a few slightly more mellow sets from time to time- it's a different kind of vibe that you can create and it means you can play at a greater variety of venues too.
Rehearsals start for our Southampton gig in a couple of days, so we need to put our heads together and choose the songs we want to play- we've been after a slot at this venue for quite a while now, so we're really looking forward to it.
Our 'newee' TOO LONG NOW is still waiting in the wings - all the recording has been done - just need to mix the track when we're all together, so that everyone's happy with the final outcome. WE need more hours in the day!!!!!
BIG thanks to Dave The Esthameian and his lovely wife for coming to
the gig on Wednesday - it was great to see you guys there!! Cheers Mel xx.
============================================
AUGUST 3rd- HAPPY BIRTHDAY IAN!!!- We're taking a little trip down to Brighton today so should be fun! xxx.
============================================
JUNE 28th- great day recording today- got the bass down and some fat guitar tracks on our new song- can't wait to get stuck into the vocals!!
But ... for ... now ... I ... need ... sleep.
Mel xx.

JUNE 26th p.m!
Oh yeah just remembered that I forgot to mention we are up to London on July 15th for an audition to support the Sugababes and some other heavy weights at a big gig in August- we get twenty adrenaline-fuelled minutes to impress a panel of judges with our finest songs and most impassioned performance- bring it on!!!
============================================
JUNE 26th a.m- o.k a quick update- we recorded the drum track for TOO LONG NOW on Saturday, and Matt and Hel have been working their socks off cleaning it up ready for the bass and guitars to be laid down this weekend- the guys spent ages mic-ing up the kit and trying to get the room as dead as possible, so hopefully all their efforts will have paid off.
Lee A has also come up with a new idea for the intro that sounds fantastic- I can't wait to see how this song is gonna come together.
On a personal note I had a fab birthday yesterday- pampered and spoiled rotten!! It was great just to chill out and catch up with my family again.
So now that I'm fully refreshed, it's back to trying to finish another song that I'm working on- the 10% inspiration has been and gone, so now it's the 90% perspiration bit!!
Cheers all Mel xxx.
============================================
JUNE 9th- all good here- really productive rehearsal time on Saturday, we got Matt to do a live recording of TOO LONG NOW for us- just so we could sit back, have a good listen and do a bit of group decision making as to how the track was working- what drum fills should go where, whether BV's would enhance the song or just end up being a distraction- all that kind of invaluable stuff.
We're aiming to start recording a new 4 track demo on 21st, and this will be the first song in line-we're all feeling pretty confident that we've sussed it as much as we can and that all the parts are working well together. It's a song that requires passion and abandon in it's delivery, so really hoping we can capture that when the old red light goes on!!
New song ideas seem to be floating through the ether at a fair old pace right now which is exciting- I guess the discipline element is that you've got to try at some point to methodically work through them all until they become shiny new songs- otherwise they just remain nice little nuggets that you can't gig or really do anything with.
So yep, we have more than enough to get stuck into, and really looking forward to creating our new demo- you'll all be the first to hear it when it's done!!!
Cheers for now
Mel xx.

JUNE 1st- Hometown gig:
Last night was a bit of a trip down memory lane for me, as we played a gig in the very 1st venue that we ever performed at, when Sunsoma was but a fledgling band!
We performed 10 songs with a cluster of semi- acoustic tracks mid set, and were warmly received by our local crowd. It was a great reminder of how far we've evolved musically and all the experiences we've had as a band. We were immediately offered a booking for Christmas Eve too, so it's all good.
I really feel things are starting to come together for us now and that we're writing the kind of material that excites me and makes me want to get out there and say "hey, listen to this!"
Glad to have Hel back from the U.S, apart from the fact that we've just missed her as a mate, we've got so much stuff to work on, there's not a moment to lose!!!
Bye 4 now
Mel xx.

MAY 28th- new song in the making! As Hel is still away in the U.S.A the rest of the band came round our house this weekend for a writing session- We had planned to work on some guitar and keys parts for a quirky song of ours called CONCRETE FOR SHOES, but inspiration swept us in an entirely different direction that day and we wrote the verse and chorus for a new track entitled LITTLE WIRES.
It's funny, I used to get so hung up about having to come up with the lyrics for a song straight away- now I just try to sit back a bit and let THEM decide when they want to make themselves known to me- it doesn't mean that I work any less hard at it, it's just a different approach and maybe it allows a greater opportunity for those unconscious thoughts to float to the surface....
I am still in the middle of crafting my 2nd verse as I write this, but so far the song is feeling really good- we have taken to recording all our ideas straight in to Lee's laptop, so that I can work with the music when we're apart from each other. That way, hopefully there's always some new development to bring to the band next time we meet.
Hel flies back in to the U.K this weekend, and we have a local gig on Sunday evening in our hometown- it's where SUNSOMA performed our very 1st gig- it reminds me of what an amazing time we've had since the early days, and just how far we have come!!
Cheers all!
Mel xx.
============================================
He has designed and constructed the whole concept- it's a scrapbook of our experiences together both on and off stage, documenting the highs and lows of being in a band, as well as giving glimpses into who we are as people.
There are a couple of pages that Lee is still working on, but we were so excited we just had to put the site up anyway!
So GO GO GO and take a look at the story so far........
Other news: We are missing Hel as she's away in America for two weeks now, but the rest of us are getting together for some more writing this week which is always exciting to kind of see where it goes!
Cheers Mel xx.
MAY 12th- Have just returned from Worksop after performing at Sommersby's Birthday party- A really good time was had by all and it was great to meet Phil, his wife Kate, and of course some of the other Sellaband artists.
We kicked off the evening with a set of 6 semi- acoustic tracks ending with a cover of Coldplay's YELLOW ( at this point, Heidi joined us on stage to perform a duet!).
In the 2nd set we were 'fully plugged' and rocked out in true SUNSOMA style!! We introduced a couple of kicking new numbers as well as our cover of MAD WORLD and Elton John's SATURDAY NIGHT'S ALRIGHT FOR FIGHTING- PHIL and KATE had some killer moves on that dance floor!!
( and there were certainly a few to be risen to! ), and just soldiered on and kept his cool- he is such a great guy to have on board and Matt, when you read this, we STLL NOTICE AND APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU DO FOR US BUDDIE!!- thanks a zillion.
Sunday was a bit of a blur and was spent mainly chilling and recharging our batteries as sleep had been in short supply! We still found the energy to re-live the highlights though- the gyratory bear being one of them (sorry, a bit of an in- joke!), at least 2 seamless recoveries from spontaneously 'extended' parts to songs due to one or other of us being distracted by the delights on the buffet table, and watching the sun come up as we drove home in the early hours. Oh yes, we have also decided that we like the word 'copious' and shall be including it in our conversations as much as possible-e.g: we drank copious amounts of coffee at the motorway services.
So, jesting aside, we are now back to writing and rehearsing for our next gig- there are two songs that I'd really like to introduce to our set- one is called CONCRETE FOR SHOES and the other is DRY LAND- both songs are written chordally and lyrically, so it's just a matter of how we put all the parts together to enhance the melodies etc.
Have a good week all speak soon Mel xx.
MAY 8th- hey it's been ages! Our internet has been down for the past two weeks so we've been off the radar which has been mind- blowingly frustrating to say the very least.
However, inspite of grappling with technological malfunctions, the mood in the Sunsoma camp is pretty buoyant right now- we played a couple of local gigs this week as we wanted a pre run through before Sommersby's party on Saturday night, just to iron out any technical glitches and check that we were still happy with the order of the set list etc.
We were received really well by an incredibly supportive crowd who got into our music almost straight away and seemed to lap up our performance with cheers and whoops of delight!
The most encouraging thing for me were all the comments about the songs- people are loving our new material, which makes you think 'great, we're heading in the right direction'. We played a brand new song called HURRICANES PASS and it went down a storm! (Ho Ho!!)
Two nights later, Sunsoma went unplugged and played an acoustic set at the Fox and Pelican in Grayshott- this is not something that we usually do, and of course we sadly missed Hel not being with us as it was a no- drums- aloud venue.
But again we were received extremely well, and those who were song- writers amongst the audience were suitably impressed by our "innovative" sound and arrangements. So all in all we're feeling pretty good and looking forward to the big bash on Saturday!
Hel then jets off to America for a two week trip with the Naval band that she plays for, whilst the rest of us will get together for some more writing and possibly recording.
Bye for now Mel xx.
APRIL 13th- it's blog time! There's nothing like a gig coming up and that steady rise of pressure that inevitably permeates the rehearsal room, to get you pulling your finger out! - we're tying up the loose ends which is all good- Lee A is now the proud owner of a shiny new laptop which means he can easily access his labyrinth of sounds, sort out all the backing tracks and generally do all the clever bits!
Our new song is called ONE THING- the concept came to me in the middle of the night, and I have learnt to my cost what happens if you don't drag yourself out of bed, and reach for anything that resembles a pen and paper to write those first few lyrics down- you JUST WON'T REMEMBER THEM in the morning, however much you like to kid yourself!! I wonder how many songs have been lost that way?!
If I had to sum the track up, I'd say it was a 'spirited little number that does exactly what it says on the tin!'
Hope everyone's world is spinning smoothly speak soon Mel xx.
APRIL 1st-morning all! Just thought I'd give you a brief update on life in the band. It's all been going really well, Saturday saw us revisiting a song of ours called TOO LONG NOW and I have to say Lee C wowed us yet again with some extremely tasty guitar parts-they work really well with the keys and it has brought a whole new flavour to the song- It still needs a bit of work here and there, but it's so close to being finished, and I can't wait to play it with the whole band in a couple of days time!
We also have the makings of another new song on our hands- not even 100% sure of the title yet, but I think it will go down really well as part of our acoustic set- I have the lyrics pretty much there, so we just need to work on the instrumentation and arrangement. Creatively, this is a really exciting time for us-we're learning so much as we experiment and write together- it's what I've always been looking for!
Mel xx.
21st March- IT REALLY IS GOOD FRIDAY- WE MADE IT TO 5K!!!! What a great feeling to have passed that milestone- I am enjoying the moment, but can't wait to see that 3rd strip of red filled up to the 10K mark too!!
It's business as usual for us guys tomorrow- we're meeting to practise and shape our set for Sommersby's gig which is fast approaching.
Just want to say a huge thank you to all our believers who have made this happen for us so far- have yourselves a great Easter break- I think I'll go get me some chocolate eggs to celebrate......! Take it easy Love Mel and the band xx.
19th March- Illness has struck and band practise is cancelled- such is real life, these things happen-even to budding musicians. LEE C get better soon buddy!! We miss you already xx. Just phoned Hel and she said she's gonna try out a fancy new trigger that she's just bought for her drums instead, and me and Ian are gonna work on band stuff so it's all good.
Thankfully I just managed to catch Lee 2 and tell him we're not meeting up before he jumped on his train and spent loads of money getting here- PHEWWWW!!
Amazing news about Ellie Williams- you go girl!!! I really hope she finds a great producer and ends up with an album that she is really proud of. We wish her every success... Take care all Mel xxx.
15th March- Hello all of you good folks who take time out to read our blog updates! We are very pleased to introduce you to a new track this week titled- THIS CANNOT BE BROKEN- inspired by a really good friend of mine who has been through some tough times in her life, but she's way stronger than she thinks and the song is sort of saying 'come on, just keep going!' I'm giving her a copy tomorrow so I hope she likes it!!
We purposely kept the track pretty paired down and acoustic this time and I think it really works- although Hel is working on putting her drums to the song so can't wait to see what she comes up with!
Take care all I'll write again soon Love Mel xx.
2nd March- It felt good to be reunited as a full band yesterday- we successfully laid down some acoustic guitar tracks for our new song " THIS CANNOT BE BROKEN ", and the aim is to get keys and vocals recorded this week so that we have something new for the ears of SELLABAND! We are really excited about this new song- it appeared so unexpectedly and what can I say, I think it's brilliant and I just love singing it!! There is so much you could do with the track production- wise, but for now we're just gonna keep it pretty simple so we can get it up on the site. Cheers all Mel + the band xx.
All is good with us lot- Hel+ Matt's absence yesterday meant that we were drum-less, so we pulled up the sofas in our rehearsal room and the 'SUNNIES' went all out acoustic! We are aiming to get a set of more stripped back songs together along side our other tracks , so that it gives us a greater opportunity to gig in different venues and showcase a more mellow vibe as and when the situation dictates.
- this time the vocal melody arrived before the lyrics- I could hear where I wanted to go in my head, so it was a case of just singing any old gibberish into the mic to get the song going. Now comes the hard but beautiful task of crafting those elusive lyrics!
We had a very successful first meeting this week with Emma the animation student and we're hatching a plan for how we move forward- she's really exited to make a film for us- we took a look at some of her earlier work, and very much like what we've seen. Things probably won't kick off till the summer, but at least we've got the ball rolling... speak soon Mel xx.
We were back in the classroom yesterday (quite literally- as our normal venue wasn't available, we met in room B7 at a local school) for what I can only describe as a cracking day of song writing!
We've been working on a song called WIDE ASLEEP that we've never been entirely happy with, and I've lost count with how many versions
we've come up with. But all I can say is that it finally just 'clicked' into place yesterday and the whole vibe of the song has completely changed and it sounds a million times better! It's now a song that I'd feel so happy about gigging- it's definitely a strong contender for our new set that we're building.
OTHER NEWS: We have an exciting opportunity to work with a very talented animation student who wants to come up with some creative visuals for one of our songs- so we're off for a meeting this week to discuss the way forward. Cheers all Mel xx.
Well here we are, windswept and ready for the second month of the year. I've just completed SUNSOMA's Q+A for the next tribune- I have to say it's a great way to sharpen up your thinking about where you're going, your goals, what makes you different, and why people should take you seriously, so be sure you drop by the Tribune next week and sample my efforts!!!
Other news: our new look official web-site is coming on a treat, designed by our very own Mr. Anderson, it is sheer genius, and quite simply I can't wait to launch it.
Songs are going well too- mini breakthroughs happening all over the place- I got so stuck with my chorus to one song, and right at the end of our last practise I had a 'eureka' moment and found where I wanted to go with it! Only a small matter now of fixing the lyrical phrasing and then we'll be away..... Have a good week all and remember to pay a visit to the Tribune! Mel xxx.
Morning all! just a brief update- great practise on Saturday- we've got 3 new songs bubbling under and it was definitely more of a love than hate experience this time! I've got some serious lyric writing to do this week and a chorus to crack, but I can't wait to get stuck in.
Mr A. our man behind the keys has been working on designing our new web-site which is looking FAB so far- it's quirky and creative and a real breath of fresh air..... That's it for now- wish we could play you our new tracks right now! Thanks for dropping by to read this and have a great week cheers Mel xxx.
Hello again! we're still putting together new tracks- the creative process can be a real love- hate thing sometimes though, there's a point where you seem to go 'round the houses' trying to find that missing piece to a song and the creative flow just isn't happening- that was yesterday's experience for us! No worries though, I'm told it happens to the best of them and that it's all part of how bands learn to write together and ultimately find their own unique sound and style.
We only want to put songs up on this site that we are happy with, even if it means taking just that bit longer to get them right! So, we're practising in a couple of days and I know it won't be long before we're right back in the 'zone' again! We'll keep you posted Bye for now Mel xx.
Practice went great yesterday. Nearly finished recording a new track which we hope to have up on the site soon. Watch this space!
A BIG THANKYOU!!! to everyone that voted for us to play at the Orchard gig! We didn't quite make it this time but there were 9 other great acts to compete against so we knew it would be tough. We are all really excited that 2008 is upon us and can't wait to start gigging again and show you some of the new material that we have been working on. Hopefully you'll be able to hear some of it in the very near future!!! We will keep you posted.
